Gary’s story embodies Udacity’s mission to democratize education. When you picture a new programmer, you probably don’t imagine a middle-aged man with grandchildren. Gary spent his early adult years finding the right job, and getting into AT&T as a technician allowed him to start a career. AT&T encouraged him to develop his skills and become a self-taught programmer. In 2015 he finished his Udacity Nanodegree to formalize his computer science education; a move he says helped give him the confidence to land a promotion. It was a pleasure filming with Gary and his family in St. Louis — it was my first time in the Gateway City. The travel and coordination with a hired crew provided a new (at the time) challenge. It all worked out beautifully on this piece that I produced, directed, and edited.
